Using a Neewer teleprompter remote with Rolltake on iPhone
Neewer's little Bluetooth remote ships with most of its teleprompter hoods and works with Rolltake for free. So do the keyboard-style clickers and page-turner rings sold for slides and sheet music. This guide covers pairing, the exact button mapping in Rolltake, and the one iOS quirk that stops remotes from working.
Two kinds of remote
Bluetooth teleprompter remotes come in two families, and they pair differently.
Proprietary BLE remotes. The Neewer remote and its look-alikes do not pretend to be a keyboard. They send their own button codes over Bluetooth Low Energy, and an app has to know how to listen for them. Rolltake does: it connects to the remote directly and decodes Neewer's button frames. These remotes pair inside Rolltake, not in iOS Settings.
HID keyboard remotes. Presentation clickers, page-turner rings and pedals, Bluetooth keyboards, and game controllers show up to iOS as keyboards or controllers. They pair in iOS Settings like any accessory, and Rolltake reads their key presses with no setup at all.
If you are not sure which you have: if it appears under Settings > Bluetooth and iOS offers to pair it, it is HID. If iOS ignores it, it is proprietary and belongs in Rolltake's remote picker.
Pairing a Neewer remote
1. Check iOS has not claimed it. Open Settings > Bluetooth. If the remote is listed as paired from a previous app, tap the info icon and choose Forget This Device. While iOS holds the connection, Rolltake cannot see the button presses. This is the cause of almost every "it worked with my old app" report.
2. Open Rolltake's remote picker. On the script list, tap the gear to open Settings, then Teleprompter Remote. Rolltake starts scanning. Bluetooth permission is asked for here, the first time you open the picker, and never during a read.
3. Hold the remote next to the phone and press a button. Rolltake filters the scan to devices that look like remotes: names containing Neewer, prompter, remote, or similar, devices advertising a remote-style service, and anything with a strong signal, which is the remote in your hand. Nameless remotes are listed by a short id with the strongest signal first.
4. Pick it from the list. Rolltake connects, shows "Remote connected", and remembers the remote. Next time you open a script, it reconnects on its own within a second or so. The remote keeps working if it goes to sleep and wakes; iOS completes the reconnect whenever the remote transmits again.
To switch remotes, tap Forget in the picker and scan again.
What the Neewer buttons do in Rolltake
| Neewer button | Rolltake action |
|---|---|
| Play / pause | Starts or pauses the scroll. If you are recording, the recording pauses and resumes with it. |
| A− | Text size down by 4 points (minimum 18). |
| A+ | Text size up by 4 points (maximum 120). |
| Up arrow | Nudges the script back three lines, whether scrolling or paused. |
| Down arrow | Nudges the script forward three lines. |
Two notes. The Neewer arrows move the script, they do not change speed; speed on this remote stays where you set it in the app, on the Watch, or on a keyboard-style remote. And Rolltake verifies each button frame's checksum, so a noisy connection produces no action rather than a wrong one.
Keyboard-style clickers, rings, pedals, and keyboards
Pair these in iOS Settings > Bluetooth. Then open any script in Rolltake; the prompter listens for key presses as soon as it appears. The mapping covers the keys these devices actually send:
| Key sent by the remote | Rolltake action | Typical device |
|---|---|---|
| Space, Enter | Play / pause | Bluetooth keyboards, many clickers |
| Right arrow, Page Down | Play / pause | Page-turner rings and pedals (their "next" button) |
| B, period (.), F5 | Play / pause | Presentation clickers (blank-screen and start buttons) |
| Up arrow | Speed up one level | Keyboards, some rings |
| Down arrow | Speed down one level | Keyboards, some rings |
| Left arrow, Page Up | Back one sentence | Page-turner "previous", clicker "back" |
| Escape | Close the prompter | Clicker escape button |
Page-turner rings are the surprise winner here. A $20 ring meant for sheet music gives you play/pause on one button and back-a-sentence on the other, with nothing in the shot and no pairing inside the app.
Game controllers
A PlayStation, Xbox, or 8BitDo controller paired to the iPhone also works: A (or Cross) toggles play and pause, D-pad up and down change speed, and D-pad left jumps back a sentence. Handy if you already have one on the desk.
Apple Watch
If you wear one, the Watch app does play, pause, and speed up and down, and it shows the current speed level on the wrist. Nothing to pair beyond the Watch itself. The Apple Watch guide walks through it.
Troubleshooting
The remote is not in Rolltake's list. Forget it in iOS Settings first, then rescan with the remote held close and a button pressed so it advertises.
It connects but nothing happens. If it is a proprietary remote, iOS probably still holds it; forget it in Settings. If it is a keyboard-style remote, make sure a script is open in the prompter; the key listener lives on that screen.
It worked yesterday and not today. Battery. Most of these remotes use a coin cell and give no low-battery warning.
Rolltake asks for Bluetooth permission unexpectedly. It only does so when you open the remote picker, or when reconnecting a remote you paired before. If you never paired one, it never asks.
My remote is not a Neewer. Remotes sold under other names with the same shape usually send the same frames and just work. If yours does not, email hello@rolltake.app with the brand and model; the picker reports raw button data so new remotes can be mapped.
Remote control is free in Rolltake, with no add-on. If you are still deciding on an app, the 2026 comparison notes which competitors charge for it.
Frequently asked questions
Yes, with Rolltake. Pair it inside the app (Settings > Teleprompter Remote), not in iOS Settings. Play/pause, text size up and down, and three-line nudges are mapped.
iOS has claimed the connection, so the app never sees the button presses. Forget the device in Settings > Bluetooth, then pair it from Rolltake's remote picker.
Yes. Pair it in iOS Settings like a keyboard. Its next button plays and pauses, its previous button jumps back a sentence, and arrow keys change speed. No setup in the app.
Not directly; the Neewer arrows nudge the script three lines back or forward. Change speed from the phone, an Apple Watch, or a keyboard-style remote's up and down arrows.
Yes. Neewer-style BLE remotes, keyboard-style remotes, game controllers, and the Apple Watch app are all included in the free download.
Rolltake is a free iPhone teleprompter with a fixed reading line, camera recording, and Apple Watch and Bluetooth remote control. No account, no ads, no subscription. Download it on the App Store or try the web teleprompter.
